A PRODUCTION FROM SIX LIPS THEATRE

THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR

by Nikolai Gogol

A highly corrupt town in remote Russia is thrown into panic when it learns that a Government Inspector is coming. When a well-dressed rogue, Khlestakov, arrives, he realizes he is presumed to be the inspector and takes advantage of the officials' desperate bribery.

The satirical nature of the play addresses capitalist themes of human greed, stupidity and political corruption, presented as a comedy of errors against the backdrop of Imperial Russia. Klimaszewska universalises this setting by using the concept of a travelling wagon and ensemble-driven casting, and elicits the more ridiculous elements of the play by creating a spectacle of colourful mask work, intricate sets and elements of physical theatre.

In keeping with all Six Lips productions, this probing and fantastical piece will have the recognisable handcrafted quality and concept-driven aesthetics the company has come to be recognised for.
