In December 2000, Riding Lights appointed its first Education Office to help realize Friargate Theatre's potential as a resource to schools in and around York. By 2008 the Education and Youth department had expanded to comprise one full-time and one part-time member of staff as well as a gap-year volunteer and other helper.

IN - April 2002
(RL Youth Theatre's first devised production)

Riding Lights has long been committed to innovative work with schools across the UK, and our Roughshod companies spend much of their time teaching and performing in schools. We're delighted to have an Education Officer, and to be able to develop relationships with our own local schools.

Riding Lights' first Education project was Love Forty. During the rehearsal period in January 2001 for Roughshod's Love Fifteen - a play about parent/teenager relationships - groups of students from two local secondary schools were invited to observe and contribute to the devising process. The students then worked with their Drama teachers to devise their own plays on the same subject, which were then performed at Friargate Theatre in March, and moderated as part of the students' Drama GCSE coursework.

An ongoing Education programme is now underway, featuring a wide range of projects:
